How should I plan a route from Buenos Aires to Iguazu Falls and the Iberá Wetlands in Argentina? Is there a direct way to get from Iguazu Falls to the Iberá Wetlands?

Last time Summer wrote about the Iberá Wetlands, some friends asked:

  • Can the Iberá Wetlands be combined with Buenos Aires in one trip?
  • Or how about pairing Iguazu Falls with the Iberá Wetlands?
  • Better yet, can Buenos Aires, Iguazu Falls, and the Iberá Wetlands all be included in one itinerary?

Of course! It’s absolutely possible!

Route 1: Buenos Aires + Iguazu Falls + Iberá Wetlands

  • Day 1: Explore Buenos Aires for a full day.
  • Day 2: Take a morning flight from Buenos Aires to Puerto Iguazú and spend the day exploring Iguazu Falls.
  • Day 3: In the morning, take a bus or car from Puerto Iguazú to Posadas. In the afternoon, continue from Posadas to Colonia Carlos Pellegrini (Argentinians clearly aren’t afraid of long names! Let’s just call it Pellegrini from now on).
  • Day 4: Enjoy a full day exploring the Iberá Wetlands.
  • Day 5: In the morning, travel from Pellegrini to Posadas, then take an afternoon flight back to Buenos Aires.

Extended Route for a Deeper Exploration of Iguazu & Iberá Wetlands

For those who want to take their time and fully experience Iguazu Falls and the Iberá Wetlands, here’s an extended version of the itinerary:

  • Day 1: Explore Buenos Aires for a full day.
  • Day 2: Take a morning flight from Buenos Aires to Puerto Iguazú and spend the day exploring the Argentine side of Iguazu Falls.
  • Day 3: Visit the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls on a full-day tour from Puerto Iguazú.
  • Day 4: Travel from Puerto Iguazú to Posadas in the morning, then continue to Colonia Carlos Pellegrini in the afternoon. (Argentinians clearly love long names—let’s just call it Pellegrini from now on!) Alternatively, you can opt for a private transfer directly from Posadas to Pellegrini for a more comfortable journey.
  • Day 5: Enjoy a full day exploring the Iberá Wetlands.
  • Day 6: Experience horseback riding through the water, kayaking in the wetlands, and a thrilling night safari in Iberá.
  • Day 7: Travel from Pellegrini to Posadas in the morning, then take an afternoon flight back to Buenos Aires.

Route 2: Iguazu Falls + Iberá Wetlands

For those not starting from Buenos Aires but instead crossing over from the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls into Argentina, here’s how to combine Iguazu Falls with the Iberá Wetlands:

  • Day 1: Cross the border into Argentina and spend the day exploring the Argentine side of Iguazu Falls.
  • Day 2: In the morning, take a bus or car from Puerto Iguazú to Posadas. In the afternoon, continue from Posadas to Colonia Carlos Pellegrini (Argentinians sure love long names—let’s just call it Pellegrini from now on!).
    • Posadas, the capital of Misiones Province, is a key transportation hub with convenient connections to both Puerto Iguazú and Buenos Aires. Using Posadas as a transfer point makes getting to Pellegrini much easier.
  • Day 3: Enjoy a full-day adventure in the Iberá Wetlands.
  • Day 4: In the morning, travel from Pellegrini to Posadas. In the afternoon, either fly back to Buenos Aires or continue to another destination in Argentina.

Route 3: Buenos Aires + Iberá Wetlands

Some travelers have already been to Iguazu Falls but still have many unexplored destinations in Argentina—including the Iberá Wetlands! Here’s how to plan a trip combining Buenos Aires with Iberá:

  • Day 1: Explore Buenos Aires for a full day.
  • Day 2: Travel from Buenos Aires to Pellegrini. There are two options:
    1. Take a bus or drive from Buenos Aires to Mercedes (not the car brand, but the town in Corrientes Province, Argentina), then continue from Mercedes to Pellegrini.
    2. Take a flight or bus from Buenos Aires to Posadas, then travel from Posadas to Pellegrini.
    • Mercedes is located on the southern side of the Iberá Wetlands, while Posadas is on the northern side. Both routes provide access to Pellegrini.
  • Day 3: Spend a full day exploring the Iberá Wetlands.
  • Day 4: Travel from Pellegrini to Posadas and return to Buenos Aires.

Wondering what other destinations you can pair with your trip?

Central Argentina’s Córdoba and the northern region of Salta are both excellent choices!

Since Buenos Aires is Argentina’s main flight hub, Summer searched high and low but couldn’t find direct flights from Posadas to Córdoba or Salta. So, let’s just fly back to Buenos Aires—because once you’re there, the possibilities are endless!

From Buenos Aires, you can head north to Salta, south to Ushuaia, or west to Mendoza—all just a flight away!

And it’s not just about Argentina—whether you’re planning to explore other South American countries, that’s just as easy!
