Perfect 4-Day Mexico Itinerary: Exploring Mexico City & Guanajuato in Just 2 Days Each

How many of you dream of visiting Guanajuato during the Day of the Dead(Día de los Muertos)? Guanajuato itself is already a place you can’t resist, and during Día de los Muertos, it’s even more enchanting! I wasn’t so lucky and missed the celebration, but the vibrant colors of the city made me truly never want to leave!

How should you plan a 2-day trip to Guanajuato from Mexico City?

Day 1:

Take a bus from Mexico City to Guanajuato in the morning (a 5-6 hour ride). Upon arrival, head straight to the funicular to go up Pipila Hill. If you’re arriving in the evening, you can opt to visit a museum beforehand, like the childhood home of Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo’s husband, or the unique Mummy Museum in Guanajuato. If time is tight, you can choose one of the two.

Day 2:

Start with the Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato, followed by a visit to Guanajuato University, which surprisingly has a campus right in the city center and is as beautiful as a piece of art. It’s located near the Basilica of Our Lady, the very church that appears in the panoramic photos taken from Pipila Hill. After visiting the church and university, it’s time to get lost in the colorful alleys of Guanajuato! especially the alley of the kiss. Guanajuato is famous for its vibrant streets, and the way Mexicans pair colors rivals the skills of Colombians. Let’s get lost!

The most famous alley in these streets is the Alley of the Kiss. At the end of the alley, two houses are so close to each other that couples can stand on the balconies of both and kiss each other across the gap. This is probably the most photographed spot in Guanajuato. Couples planning to take photos, take note—you’ll need to bring a photographer with you!

If you have an extra day in Guanajuato, Summer highly recommends:

Day 3:  Visit the Mercado Hidalgo, the local food market. Why the market? Because when Summer stayed in Guanajuato, she was lucky enough to live with a sweet Mexican grandmother. Not only was she incredibly kind, but she also had a kitchen where Summer could cook! So, Summer went to the local market, bought some ingredients, cooked a simple meal, and shared it with her host, having fun chatting using a translation app. This turned out to be one of Summer’s most enjoyable experiences in Guanajuato.
